Sooo glad I moved this website away from Demon Internet ... my pages there are still (9.15 this morning) invisible to everyone in the outside world - including me! - and an email from them this morning suggests it may yet take another 5 days to sort out the problems.

John - bit of news ! Firpark won the first-ever Strathclyde Police Citizenship Award with their presentation about Rock Challenge (2 trophies and £150!)
What's even better is that I now am in the process of setting up a meeting with the chief super (community) who is keen on raising awareness of Rock Challenge in the Strathclyde area :)))
Awareness is certainly raised at Firpark - we have 120 people coming to see their Rocka performance next Monday and we only have 90 pupils in the whole secondary school - half of whom are in the Rock Challenge team !
Vanessa Geib
(Ed: go for it, Vanessa, and many congratulations to the Firpark team too ! :)

Phew! Thank heavens for that ! The lifeline is back ... (Was getting bored ! Now i can vary my days again :)

Oh PHEW ... WHAT A RELIEF ! I've got the website back online :)
Following the collapse of the website on Demon Internet (when they decided to "improve" the service for their homepages customers like me :) and their seeming inability to get it back up and running again, I moved (8.55 pm Tuesday) all the Rocka pages to a new home on EasySpace (we'll see what sort of a service THEY provide, eh ?) and typing rockchallenge.co.uk in folks' web browsers started bringing people to its new home at 10.15 Wednesday morning - hooray !!
Take care - John (Editor)

Are you a fan of MySpace ? If you are, then you should download and install version 7.1.6 of Apple Quicktime (the movie viewer) because from version 7.1.5 onwards it's been protected against the latest piece of spy software that downloads and plays a hidden movie while you're connected to some sites on MySpace and - while it's playing - also steals your logon information etc. Download it from here (but make sure you first unclick "with iTunes" if you don't want that as well, and also unclick the 3 boxes further down if you don't want your email address to go to Apple :)

Heya All ! Just a word from Cowes (although seems really strange i seem to be the only one on here from there ... oh well, i shall be the voice of Cowes :)
Am a little gutted about not getting a national prem award if i am honest, although i take great comfort in the fact that everybody who won them i am sure thoroughly deserved them. I know we all enjoyed everybody elses's performances at the southern event and am sure the northern event standard was just as high.
The dvd looks fab - am extremely pleased with Cowes.
I know that us student leaders as Cowes were hoping for the National award but if we lost out to anyone I am glad it was a fellow Island school so Congrats, Sandown (still miss you, Newthy) AND it is like Tim says - we were extremely honoured to be nominated as it was a recognition of just how much a team of 6 students can achieve with the help of a fantastic cast ... and crew and thinking about it, there wasn't just 6 of us in our production crew - it was our entire team.
I am STILL very proud of you all at Cowes and as i sit here writing this I am forever thinking back to the 2nd of June and how much of a pleasure it was to be associated with you all - you were all well behaved and did the school proud and i felt like a proud parent
.
On a personal note (won't be long, promise ... i know i've already waffled) THANKS TO ALL THE ROCK CHALLENGE CREW FOR EVERYTHING:
  • Zoie, for putting up with me when i panicked about Music Licensing before the event;
  • Dan and Mark for being so calm backstage on heats and finals - how you do that all the time i don't know)
  • Ruddy - so funny and happy all the time
  • all the Volunteers and Rock Challenge Crew who made the day special, and finally Tim and Dave:
  • Tim - you have been fantastic through this whole experience and have made it a whole lot easier. (And i will never forget your kind words at the finals - i don't know if you remember but i do);
  • Dave - I just completely admire you. I think you are amazing and so supportive. I still find your schizophrenia joke funny (even if others don't :) and i definitely think of you as one of my heroes. I don't know whether i would have been as calm if you weren't there. (Oh, and sorry for crying in the wings whilst Cowes were performing - it was just an amazing experience - and i will always love you for saying our soundtrack was good.)
Sorry i've yabbered, but please could you pass that last bit on, john, as i do not know whether the crew read these messages. (I also think you are amazing as well for keeping this site going.)
Much love to all - Lauren (Cowes High Stage Manager)
And you, Lauren, are - of course - brilliant ! I'll pass your messages on now, never fear.
John (Editor / sometimes stage sweeper-upper :)

Hello :)
I know this may be a bit early after the finals finishing but do you know when would be a good time to start volunteering for next year ? I have now left my school but I would like to continue enjoying the experience if possible
I really enjoyed the northern open final - it was my school's 1st year of getting through after 4 years of trying - and I would like to help everyone else experience the enjoyment of rock challenge as I really enjoyed it. Sadly I have now left school so I can now longer continue but I would like to help others enjoy it
I enjoyed Grimsby (but I didn't enjoy the 12 hour bus journey to get down there !)
Anyway, bye for now !
Vicky (Keith Grammar School)
I would drop an email to the Rock Challenge office, Vicky (probs best to email tim at rockchallenge.co.uk) and let them know that you intend to apply to volunteer for 2008. You can't volunteer for a specific day / date yet because there's no 2008 Tour Calendar out yet :)

Hi all !
Just wanted to say a huge well done and congratulations to everyone who has not just won heats and finals this year but to ALL the schools who have taken part. Each tour that I've been a part of keeps getting better and better than the last and this year has been no exception. This year has been a fantastic tour and I've especially enjoyed getting into some new venues at Crawley and Bournemouth as well as coming up to the Northern Finals at Grimsby too
It's always a real pleasure to do the tour, getting to see themes and dances people have come up with me, meeting new people from schools and volunteers etc !

Keeping busy since the tour finished though! I'm playing Slender in Shakespeare's Merry Wives of Windsor 27th July to 4th August (so deep into rehearsals for that) but I'm really missing Rock Challenge already and can't wait to see what everyone comes up with next year :)
Hi John- hope you and Wendy are all well. Keep in touch 'cos it always seems so long in between tours :)
Simon (Volunteer)
Simon - you didn't say where Merry Wives was being performed ... tell me ?
And we are both fine ... finally started waking up yesterday after the southerns :))

Ahhhh ... you lucky South Hampshire / IoW people !
We all love a great team, don't we ! Well there's one called The Red Arrows, and if you keep your eyes peeled you'll hopefully see them doing a display in the skies over HMS Collingwood's "Field Gun 100 Day" (between Fareham and Stubbington, not far west of Portsmouth) from 11.55 to 12.30 on Saturday, and again from 4.55 to 5.30 at Newport on the Isle of Wight (SUSPECT that might be for the Isle of Wight Festival ?)
(And therefore they're not displaying in Yorkshire this weekend ... doh !)

Hello everyone :)
A message just in from Tim ... enjoy !
John (Website Editor)

Dear All,

In 2006 we ran a National Premier Awards scheme. A panel of judges reviewed the performances and the awards, based on the current "Special Awards", were awarded to the best in each category from across all of the UK Premier schools. This is happening again in 2007, but with an exciting new section - the National Open Division Awards Scheme.

ROCK CHALLENGE® NATIONAL PREMIER AWARDS:

A panel of judges have reviewed the Premier performances based on the videos and notes made at the heats and Premier Finals and nominated schools who, along with the winners of the awards at the Finals, will make the nominated schools in each area. For example, Davison High School for Girls from the South and St Louise's College from the North will vie for the 2007 National Premier Award for Choreography alongside a number of other nominated schools chosen by the judges.

ROCK CHALLENGE® NATIONAL OPEN AWARDS:

A panel of judges have reviewed the Open performances based on the videos and notes made at the heats and finals and nominated schools who, along with the winners of the awards at the Finals, will make the nominated schools in each area. For example, Queen Mary's College and Bullers Wood School from the South and Rawlett Community Sports College from the North will vie for the 2007 National Open Award for Choreography alongside a number of other nominated schools chosen by the judges. This could include schools who didn't make it through to the finals.

Please bear in mind that there is a different set of judges judging the National awards - just because a school won an award at the final does not mean that they will necessarily win the National Award.

AWARDS WILL BE PRESENTED SEPARATELY (ie one per division) IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS:
  • Choreography
  • Set Design
  • Staging
  • Concept Originality
  • Concept Interpretation
  • Costume Design
  • Hair Design
  • Make-up Design
  • Soundtrack
  • Lighting
  • Video Performance
  • Drama Skills
  • Most Entertaining Performance
AWARDS WILL BE PRESENTED JOINTLY (i.e. Open and Premier schools will compete against each other) IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS:
  • Stage Crew - nominations will be announced
  • Written awards - only the winners announced
The nominations will be released via email tomorrow, June 7th, to nominated teachers and publicly to all other teachers and via this website the following day, June 8th.

The National Award winners will be announced on Tuesday, June 12th. All national award winners will receive a framed award.

Good Luck!
Tim (UK Event Manager)

Dear All - Dave here ... UK Stage Manager

I can honestly say that following this year's tour, I have never been this tired in my entire life !

(Of course, playing football the Sunday after each of the Premier Finals won't have helped ! :)

That said, I've enjoyed the 2007 Tour more than any other. The Rock Challenge crew have been a joy to work with and the schools have been a pleasure to work with, from teachers to performers and backstage crews.

Congratulations to those who won and to the others - please remember that the achievement of performing in professional theatres around the country is an incredible thing in itself, so well done to everyone !

Well done to all the new schools, new ASMs, the technical and video crew and volunteers, and let's also not forget those schools who enter every year without fail, some of whom collected "10 year framed CDs" this year.

Last but not least the office staff: they're 5 in total and they work tirelessly all year round to make these events happen.

Thanks again, everyone, for making my year so enjoyable and I'll see you all again soon.

Dave

Mrs Hylton and Hornsea school- I've said "Well Done !" once before, but I'll say it again - I think you deserve it as you were fab! Congratulations on being Northern Prem Final winners
(Had you picked from the start - I should be judging ... I knew where everyone was going to place! (John: How do I become a judge? I can do that job EASY! Haha :))
Also thanks to you personally, Mrs Hylton, for your comments on the short film. Although I didn't technically use an editing suite, it was a laptop from the media technician that I had to "steal", take home for the weekend and complete the whole thing in less than 10 hours - it was gruelling but I got there. And I know that the whole WORLD can see my short film as John's looking into putting it on the website ;) (Legend you are, absolute legend.)

To all the Hornsea Team ...
Well, what can I say ?! Returned home from holiday at 7.00am Sunday morning and have been overwhelmed ever since by messages of congratulation. I am so proud of the whole team and what you have managed to achieve.
Last Saturday was an unbelievable day, full of highs and lows, but when it was finally over and we had been placed first overall I couldn't quite take it all in! The standard of competition was so incredibly high and the sense of support from other teams throughout the day made it the best Premier Final I have ever been involved in.
Thank-you to all of the Rock Challenge team for continuing to run the events up and down the country (literally, at times!) with such great commitment and energy - so much appreciated.

Also thank you, John, for providing an outlet through this messages page for students and staff so that they can express themselves about the life-changing experience called Rock Challenge!
Kind Regards,
Karen Hylton (Hornsea School)
PS Congratulations to John Peart at Baysgarth for winning the Short Film competition - all that time in the editing suite was worth it!

Afternoon All !
What an amazing end to the tour. It's sad to see it go ... but it's nice to know there is another one just round the corner in around 7 months time
Looking at the photographs and DVDs of some performances, i have to agree - in the last 5 years i have been involved with rc it has been the best yet ! The atmosphere is just a "once in a lifetime" for some people and it's so good to see many people involved nowadays
There is a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes that quite a lot of people don't see. When I first started I was a performer and backstage just looked like easy work to do ... trust me, it's not ! (But it's all worth it :)
Zoie, Tim, Mitch and Dave have done brilliantly this tour (have done since they started) and I would like to thank them on behalf of quite a lot of us for keeping the rock challenge tour going and as strong as ever
I would also like to thank TEGA from Hull who did all this year's sound and lighting
. That too can be such a stressful job (as I found out at the portsmouth heats when the lighting rig went down ... that just wasn't fun at all but they solved it and needless to say the show went on
Thank-you to Visions Unlimited who do all your videoing and make you look good on the big screens :))
Finally, thank-you to all the schools that took part ... rock challenge couldn't go on without you
Massive thanks to everyone and i'll see you all again - hopefully - next year

Davey Anscombe (Rockateer, Visions (Portsmouth Finals) and ex-Park Community)

HOW GOOD ARE QUEEN MARY?
Well done to that school. Not only were they the best ever global rock entry i have ever seen but they were the most gracious team i have ever seen and were sooooooooooooo nice. A credit to the rock challenge. I was so impressed by them as was everyone at my school (Hertswood) who were thrilled to be part of the day and see them perform a truly brilliant piece. And the pyramid. OMG!
And Luke is a talented boy too. Well done
